Estimating Cost of Higher Education in Indonesia

Indonesia has many good quality universities strewn across the nation. Unfortunately, the cost of higher education continues to rise each year, for both state and private universities.

If you intend to send your child to a favorite local university in a few years, you need to carefully research the cost required to complete an undergraduate program which usually takes around 4 years.

Which One to Choose? State or Private?

In the past, state universities (PTN) were popular choices due to their combination of competitive pricing and good quality education. However, the situation is slightly different after the government has eliminated subsidies for PTN and also due to the emergence of good quality private universities. Today, the education costs in state and private universities are not much different.

Based on the regulation from the Minister of Education and Culture (Permendikbud) No. 55 Year 2013 dated May 23, 2013, all state universities do not require admission fees. Prospective students need to only pay for tuition fees (UKT) until they graduate. The cost is determined by the family’s economical situation; that way cross-subsidy is considered more beneficial.

Although the difference of education costs at state and private universities is not that great, some parents still choose state universities because they view that state university graduates will have a better chance of finding jobs. "SOEs and state institutions still consider university graduates as top choices when choosing employees, therefore I want my child to be accepted at a state university”, said Yuli, a civil employee in the Department of Agriculture.

Look for Scholarships

Some state universities such as UI and UGM have a program called Beasiswa Bidik Misi –education scholarships for achieving students that come from underprivileged families. One of the staff from University of Indonesia explained via phone conversation that parents who are unable to pay for their child education fees can get tuition waivers by attaching compulsory documents; Income Statement, Proof of Tax Payment and electricity bills within the last 3 months. If students make it through the selection of candidates, they will then only be charged a minimum of Rp 100,000 per semester for those majoring in Natural Science and Social Science subjects.

For those interested in studying at private universities can also look for scholarships like those offered by Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH). Endi, a UPH student majoring in Psychology academic year 2013/2014, said that he was lucky to have received the UPH scholarship that ended up lessening his university cost by 50%. “In addition to completing the test and writing an essay, I also went through academic interviews to obtain the scholarship”, he said.
